This paper discusses landscape diversity dynamics in Estonia during th
e 20th century. The analysis of maps from four different time periods
in terms of 12 diversity indicators shows that landscape diversity cha
nges in Estonia are minor. Still there remain some regional difference
s. A principal component analysis indicates four types of diversity, n
amely, shape of the patch, 'classical' diversity, land use, and number
of units, which explain 80% of the whole variability of landscape cha
nge. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.
