The cross section for projectile impact excitation-ionization of heliu
m is calculated, including spatial correlation, time-ordering, and int
erference between autoionizing and continuum states. The computational
load is greatly reduced by using configuration-interaction (CI) heliu
m wave functions and continuum pseudostates, yielding a scattering amp
litude that is a sum of analytical terms for the first-order and energ
y-conserving second- and third-order contributions, and a one-dimensio
nal integral for the energy-nonconserving second-order contributions.
