The curing of an epoxide-amine system in the presence of various amoun
ts of dibutyl phthalate as a plasticizer was studied by calorimetry. T
he initial rate and the activation energy of the process decrease dram
atically, and the highest curing rate passes through a maximum at smal
l amounts of the plasticizer added. These effects are explained by the
formation of complexes (including the polymeric ones) between the car
bonyl groups of the plasticizer and different proton-donating groups o
ccurring in this polycondensation system.
