A Western authority on the history and consequences of the 1986 disast
er at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant surveys the current debate in
Ukraine over the role of nuclear power in the country's energy balance
and management of the environmental hazard posed by the destroyed fou
rth reactor at Chernobyl'. A particular focus is on disputes within th
e Ukrainian Nuclear Power industry, and between the industry and Weste
rn funding and regulatory agencies, as well as the limited scope for a
ction given an acute lack of financial resources. Attention also is de
voted to changing public perceptions of nuclear energy in Ukraine.
