This article challenges the discipline of school psychology to begin t
o ensure that scientific knowledge is actually used by practitioners.
Topics and related issues and recommendations discussed include: the d
ialectics of science and practice; what is wanted from standards; stan
dards as a basis of practice; how standards can be created; role of th
e practitioner in implementing standards; and some of the problems to
be solved and pitfalls to be avoided. In essence, scientific standards
of practice are examined as a method of linking practical psychologic
al work to contemporary scientific knowledge.
