A 27-item questionnaire that focused on general characteristics of dir
ectors of medical student education in psychiatry tons sent to 132 U.S
. medical schools (return rate: 64%, or 84 questionnaires). A tally of
the responses revealed that the directors ave relatively young, mostl
y male, with some appointed to their position relatively soon after re
sidency. They have been in this position for a relatively shout time,
and their replacement rate is fairly high. They are frequently on a cl
inical track, generating their income from several sources. The women
did not endorse research as a major activity as often as the men. The
implications of these findings and some recommendations are discussed.
