Abstract
Polymorphism of BaR2F8 compounds is analyzed, and some peculiarities o f the crystal growth from the melt are discussed. We report on the ort horhombic BaLu2F8 crystal with ordered structure, a new crystalline ma terial for generating Ln(3+) activator ions. Spectroscopic and laser c haracteristics of Nd3+- and Er3+-doped BaLu2F8 samples are discussed a s representative examples. Besides, we pay special attention to monocl inic BaY2F8:Er3+ crystals, as active media for highly efficient CW 3 m u m laser-diode pumped lasers. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science S.A.
