The AirPEx (air pollution exposure) model is a mathematical model to e
stimate the inhalatory exposure of humans to air pollution. The model
quantifies individual and population exposures using data from air qua
lity time series and activity pattern surveys. This paper presents the
basic exposure concepts of the model, including contact, actual expos
ure concentration, intake rate, and standardisation. A case study incl
uding the exposure to ozone of the Dutch population in the 1991 summer
demonstrates the application of the model. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science
