A study on the persistency of inhibitor films under multiphase flow co
nditions using a jet-cylinder electrochemical cell is presented. Optic
al Second Harmonic Generation (SHG), electrochemical noise and linear
polarization resistance were used to monitor the surface coverage of t
hree CO2 corrosion inhibitors. It was found that slug flow conditions,
generated by simultaneously applying a liquid jet and ultrasonic cavi
tation. can cause breakdown of the inhibitor film below inhibitor conc
entrations of several ppm. Removal of the inhibitor film was not found
under jet-only or sonication-only conditions. Furthermore a jet of si
lica particles was also found to cause some stripping of the inhibitor
film. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.
