Abstract
The holding potential of an hydrogen atom in its ground state to a per fectly imaging semi-infinite metal is evaluated in a perturbative way, using exact solutions for an hydrogenic system in a half space as zer o-order wavefunctions. A potential barrier of almost-equal-to 0.11 au is found at a distance d almost-equal-to 0.85 au from the surface and a minimum in the energy of depth almost-equal-to 0.003 86 au is formed at d almost-equal-to 3.5 au.
