The electrochemical compression of hydrogen is well known since years.
But new developments of the polymer electrolyte membrane (PEM) fuel c
ells make it possible to realize the electrochemical compression in a
PEM-cell with high efficiency. A new cell design of PEM-cells for oper
ation with a high pressure difference between anode side and cathode s
ide was developed. The purification of hydrogen from carbon monoxide o
f the reformer gas can be integrated in the hydrogen compressor cell.
