A sort of equation of state for dielectrics has been deduced by applic
ation of equilibrium thermodynamics. Solving of this equation for the
case of linear dielectrics leads to the expressions for the Curie and
Curie-Weiss laws, providing anew theoretical background to these laws.
Also, a solution has been obtained which describes the temperature de
pendence of electrical susceptibility of paraelectrics with ionic and
polar covalent bonds and which, so far,bas not been described in the t
heory of dielectrics. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserv
