M. Depaepe, CATHOLIC AND NATIONAL-SOCIALIST PEDAGOGICS IN BELGIUM, 1919-1955 - THEIR AMBIVALENT RELATION AS MIRRORED BY THE VLAAMSCH-OPVOEDKUNDIG-TIJDSCHRIFT, Zeitschrift fur Padagogik, 44(4), 1998, pp. 503-522
The author discusses distance and affinity, continuity and discontinui
ty of Flemish-Catholic and National Socialist pedagogics for the perio
d up to 1945/55. With regard to some of the central issues of the Nati
onal Socialist ideology, especially the priority or willpower formatio
n, the ideology of motherhood, and national idiosyncrasies, affinities
and elements of continuity were revealed, as regards racism and biolo
gism, however, a distance was kept between the two approaches. In retr
ospect, i.e. following 1945, these affinities were more or less suppre
ssed, rather, a systematic difference between Catholic and National So
cialist pedagogics, as exemplified in the work of EW. FOERSTER, was po
stulated.
