Abstract

Locher, Markushin, and Zheng have recently claimed that a protective z ero is needed to explain the data on the central. production of the pi pi final state in pp collisions. We point out that this is more natur ally explained by the close relation the process PP-->pi pi has to pi pi elastic scattering up through the K (K) over bar threshold region. Unitarity then automatically gives a dip in the pi pi mass spectrum in accord with experiment. [S0556-2821(98)07615-2].
