Abstract
The results are presented of correlation analysis of Indian precipitat ion and 500 mb geopotential altitude in Northern Hemisphere for 20 sum mer monsoon seasons. For all considered time scales, the first EOF-vec tor of monsoon precipitation looks similarly and corresponds to the ph ase change from active monsoon to break. Monsoon breaks are often happ en 3 - 6 days after Western wind weakens and vortex intencity increase s in mid-latitudes of the Eastern Hemisphere. MCP analysis of both fie lds showed that low precipitation over most Indian territory correspon ds to positive geopotential anomaly in northern latitudes and negative anomaly in Subtropics.
