Abstract
A series of 3-aryl-substituted butenolides and butanolides has been pr epared in a common short synthetic sequence from the corresponding ary l aldehydes. The 3-arylbutanolides are prepared by cyclisation of 3-ar yl-3-cyano-1-propanols, obtained by selective reduction of 3-aryl-3-cy anopropionate esters, and are converted to 3-arylbutenolides by a sulf oxide or selenoxide elimination reaction.
