Acylation of 2.2.2! (1,2,3)cyclophane (1 a) occurs selectively at the
5,13-positions, whereas in other electrophilic substitutions this sel
ectivity is not observed; similar reaction of 5,13-di-tert-butyl2.2.2
!(1,2,3)cyclophane (1b) gives an ipso-acylation product at the tert-bu
tyl group.
