The waste water treatment facility of a plant met all discharge requir
ement other than those for the NH3-N parameter. The application of som
e bacterial cultures was used to produce a highly sturdy nitrifier bio
mass to fulfill the:required items without inhibition despite being un
der negative conditions. After application the NH3-N concentration cou
ld be drastically decreased. One additional benefit was the improvemen
t in chemical oxygen demand (COD) values.
