1. PTU treatment-induced hypothyroidism is associated with a significa
nt decrease in the chick heart rate. 2. Hypothyroidism produces a slow
onset of bradycardia, indicating a late effect of thyroid hormone dec
rease. 3. After 15 days treatment, an increase of action potential dur
ation, similar to that reported for several mammal species, has been f
ound. 4. Action potential duration is frequency and temperature depend
ent, but it has been found to be significantly different in the euthyr
oid and hypothyroid chicks.
