Abstract
Vanadium nitride, carbide, carbonitride and oxycarbide coatings were p roduced on steel substrates, by reactive magnetron sputtering from a v anadium target or by chemical vapor deposition using vanadocene as an organometallic precursor. The composition and crystallographic structu re of coatings were determined by different techniques. The mechanical characteristics of the coatings are highly dependent on both their co mposition and the deposition technique.
