A theoretical formulation for the static analysis of arbitrary quadril
ateral shaped plates is presented. The procedure is based on the Galer
kin method and uses the natural coordinates to express the geometry of
general plates in a simple form. This approach is easily adaptable fo
r analysis of triangular plates. The method is programmed and several
plate examples are solved to illustrate the accuracy and validity of t
he method. Deflection and bending moments of trapezoidal, parallelogra
m, triangular, and sector plates under static loads are obtained and t
he results, where possible, are verified with those published elsewher
