Abstract
This paper focuses on the problem of synonymy. In practice, the existe nce of synonyms is generally accepted, but in theory, synonymy is unde sirable. In this article an attempt is made to show that functional di fferences in meaning can distinguish two apparently synonymous verbs i n Modern Italian.
