Abstract
The authors examined the effect of electrochemically active and barrie r-effect pigments in various primers. The efficiency of an anti-corros ion pigment proved to be significantly dependent on the properties of the coating concerned, and particularly on its barrier properties. If the permeability of a primer is low, the protective effect of the barr ier pigment will be predominant. On the other hand, the effect of an i nhibitive pigment will be more apparent in coatings with a certain deg ree of permeability since the solubility of the pigment and the mass t ransfer conditions within the coating will be important in this case.
