The cooling of flat and long products in hot rolling technology requir
es precise information on the cooling intensity of sprays. These days,
the technology focus changes from the demand on the determination of
the final temperature to that of the final material structure. The fin
al structure depends on the thermal and deformation regimes applied. T
o design and control the cooling sections it is necessary to know the
heat transfer intensity as a function of surface temperature, coolant
pressure and speed of motion. The functions describing the cooling pro
cess can be determined using a linear high speed stand. This paper pre
sents the design of the experimental, linear high speed stand, its pos
sibilities and it provides some examples of results. (C) 1998 Elsevier
