Abstract
A new approach to sensor placement is introduced. Given a feedback con trol law having an integral representation, compute a Gaussian quadrat ure formula using the functional gain as a weight function. The nodes of the quadrature formula then give the optimal locations for sensors. To illustrate this approach numerical examples involving the control of a slewing beam are given.
