The optimal grid size for specifying object location in one and two di
mensions is found by maximizing the information content (entropy) of t
he system in which the objects reside. The information content increas
es logarithmically as the decreasing grid size approaches the object s
ize, reflecting the increasing precision of object location, but there
after the increase is not monotonic. This implies, for example, that t
he fidelity of a digitized image is dependent on pixel size in a nontr
ivial way. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science Inc. All rights reserved.
