Abstract
A stress protein that increased in amount has been isolated from winte r rye shoots subjected to hypothermia. The protein has a molecular mas s 310 kD and has two types of subunit, 66 and 56 kD. The protein has b een also found in plant mitochondria. This protein was shown to increa se the rate of non-phosphorylative respiration and to decrease the cou pling of oxidation and phosphorylation under hypothermia in vitro. It suggests a reduction in the proton control of the respiration by the s tress protein. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science Ltd. AII rights reserved.
