Abstract
HeI photoelectron spectroscopic (PES) studies of the electronic struct
ure for the compounds Si(CH3)Cl-3, Si(CH3)(2)Cl-2 and Si(CH3)(3)Cl are
given in this paper. The assignment of HeI photoelectron spectra has
been done with the aid of band shapes and intensity, and by MNDO molec
ular orbital calculations on each molecule studied. The HOMO of these
molecules have the character of a sigma bond and spread over the whole
molecule. The gradual decrease of the lowest ionization potential (IF
) associated with increasing numbers of methyl groups in the molecules
studied should be ascribed to the electron-donating effect of the met
hyl group. Both PES experimental and MNDO calculated results indicate
no (p --> d)(pi) bonding for the molecules studied.
