During the past several years, biomagnetometers have evolved from sing
le channel units to complex whole-cortex multichannel systems. Success
ful operation of such systems requires good noise cancellation and low
levels of residual noise (in both shielded and unshielded environment
s). These requirements impose certain limits on dynamic range, slew ra
te, linearity and inter-channel matching, which must be achieved by th
e processing electronics and data acquisition system when coupled to t
he large number of SQUID channels. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science Ltd. All
