P. Kurpick et al., EXCITED-STATE SUBSHELL POPULATION OF HYDROGEN-ATOMS AFTER TRANSMISSION OF RELATIVISTIC H- IONS THROUGH THIN FOILS, Physical review. A, 58(3), 1998, pp. 2183-2190
We present a theoretical study of the transmission of relativistic H-
ions through thin carbon foils for a broad range of beam energies, Our
study is based on a Monte Carlo solution of the Langevin equation des
cribing electronic excitations of the atoms during the transport throu
gh the foil. We present calculations for the subshell populations of o
utgoing hydrogen atoms and we show that there exists a propensity for
populating extreme Stark states. Our results are found to be in good a
greement with recent experimental data. We analyze the effect of a lab
oratory magnetic field on the population dynamics.
