The classical problem of stability analysis of a vertical cut-off unde
r its own weight is investigated within the framework of the yield des
ign theory. Using a class of failure mechanisms which are the generali
zation of the mechanisms involving a single discontinuity surface, the
kinematic approach leads to an improvement of the best upperbound est
imate of the stability factor of the structure obtained up to now.
