In this Note, we propose an interpretation for the microscopic mechani
sms of optical nonlinearities observed in colloidal suspensions, which
is expressed in terms of laser-induced variations in the solute diffu
sive properties- Electrostriction and SORET effect are unified with 1.
Prigogine's SORET effect kinetic theory. This theory allows us to def
ine an original thermodiffusive effect, produced by an inhomogeneous a
bsorption of the laser energy by the solute in the suspension. We theo
retically evaluate this third effect when the size of the solute parti
cles is much larger than the size of the solvent molecules.
