An SEM-study of the glossy surfaces occurring on quartzitic glacial be
ds from Scotland has shown that they are related to two coating-types.
The first one is mainly composed of silica and the second one may be
nearly pure TiO2 confirmed by EDS chemical analysis and Raman spectrom
etry. The origin of these coatings may be interpreted in terms of stre
ss-dependent solution and melting processes intervening during stick-s
lip movement of the glacier.
