Two models of open-system fractional crystallization in a periodically
replenished magma chamber have been tested on the Mururoa suite (Fren
ch Polynesia) and on Mid-Atlantic Ridge basalts sampled at 36-degrees-
50'N, respectively. The analytical data from Mururoa are consistent wi
th a model in which the residual liquid is expelled at the end of each
cycle. The alternative model, in which the liquid is erupted at the b
eginning of each cycle before fractional crystallization occurs, is pr
eferred in the case of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge.
