Abstract
Progress in the genetic and biochemical dissection of the hrp-encoded type III secretion pathway has revealed new mechanisms by which phytop athogenic bacteria infect plants. The suggestion that bacterial gene p roducts are 'delivered to' and 'perceived by' plants cells has fundame ntally changed the way in which plant-bacterial interactions are now b eing viewed.
