Abstract
Gene expression involving apoptosis in the hematopoietic system is rev iewed. In normal and hematological disorders, Fas-Fas ligand and tumor necrosis factor-alpha-receptor interaction play a major role in enhan cing apoptosis. On the other hand, bcl-2 or certain novel proteins (in cluding FADD, RIP, TRADD and sentrin) prevent apoptosis. Apoptosis is involved in myelodysplastic syndrome and pathogenesis of leukemia. Exp ression of Fas antigen plays a role in negative regulation of hematopo iesis in the bone marrow as does interferon-gamma.
