Within the framework of industrial waste revaluation a preliminary stu
dy was carried out in order to consider the real possibilities of usin
g Puff from steelworks as a power source or for heavy metal recovery.
Fluff is a waste material prevalently arising from crushing of the scr
apped motor cars employed as raw material in steel production; it is a
very heterogeneous material whose dumping is at the moment its expens
ive disposal, but which on well defined conditions could have a lawful
use as a power source. Besides, the presence of heavy metals, some of
them commercially interesting, makes their recovery useful. In this c
ontext some simple types of treatment (i.e. screening, flotation, magn
etic separation) were carried out on a sample of fluff and some of the
m resulted important as preliminar operations for a more profitable ut
ilizzation of this waste material.
