Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry is applied
to identify adsorbed species formed from ethene in zeolite HMFI. Long
chain alkenes (up to 18 carbon atoms) are detected from the zeolite e
xposed to ethene at 298 K from vacuum desorption, laser induced desorp
tion and laser ablation-chemical ionization experiments. Reaction with
ethene at 420 K forms a mixture of linear alkenes, branched alkanes,
and some mononuclear aromatics. After reaction at 560 K, the major ads
orbed species are alkylbenzenes and alkylnaphthalenes. (C) 1998 Elsevi
