M. Herring et J. Northup, THE GENERALIZATION OF SOCIAL SKILLS FOR A CHILD WITH BEHAVIOR DISORDERS IN THE SCHOOL SETTING, Child & family behavior therapy, 20(3), 1998, pp. 51-66
The purpose of this case study was to develop an intervention which wo
uld promote the generalization of social skills for a child with an ed
ucational classification of behavior disorders (BD). Generalization of
social skills is a frequently discussed proband an outcome that may b
e of particular importance in the successful inclusion of children wit
h ED in regular education classrooms. One student, previously enrolled
in a ED classroom, was identified as having few appropriate social in
teractions and several interfering inappropriate social behaviors. Var
ious strategies were employed to facilitate the generalization of lear
ned social skills. Results indicate that social skills instruction alo
ne failed to result in generalization. The subsequent use of a group c
ontingency resulted in generalization across behaviors and school sett
ings.
