Supracricoid laryngectomy is a new development in the treatment of lar
yngeal cancer in Australia. It allows the removal of both vocal cords,
vestibular folds, and the entire thyroid cartilage including the para
glottic space without the loss of laryngeal function. This technique m
ay offer a significant advance in the treatment of squamous cell carci
noma of the larynx. This paper reviews the surgical management of lary
ngeal cancer and discusses this new technique with modifications, indi
cations for its use and the advantages of supracricoid laryngectomy. C
ase reports of seven patients operated on in our institution are inclu
ded.
