A kraft lignin phenol formaldehyde resin with half the normal amount o
f phenol used in phenol formaldehyde resin replaced with kraft lignin
was prepared on an industrial scale and used as an adhesive in the ind
ustrial production of plywood. The resin production, as well as the ap
plication of the resin in plywood manufacturing, could be performed wi
thout any changes in the normal industrial routine. It was necessary t
o increase the hot-press time of the kraft lignin-containing resin by
approximately 15% compared with the press time adopted for standard ph
enol formaldehyde resin, in order to achieve full bonding strength of
the inner adhesive joints (5-ply).
