Researchers examined the interaction of gender and education as influe
nces on mate selection characteristics for 55 male and 111 female Afri
can American college students at a historically Black college/universi
ty. Students, age 17 to 38, were asked to rate 22 mate selection chara
cteristics according to their importance in selecting a partner A fact
or analysis yielded three factor scores (social stratification, person
ality, and physical variables) that were significant only for gender a
cross the social and physical variables.
