Abstract
The canonical description of the straight-line string is given in the einbein-field formalism. The system is quantized, and the Regge spectr um is reproduced. The covariant analogue of the Newton-Wigner coordina te is found, and special features of gauge fixing in the tau-reparamet rization group are discussed.
