A newborn boy developed annular erythematous lesions on his entire bod
y. Histopathological examination showed typical features of lupus eryt
hematosus. His mother was positive far anti-Ro/SSa and anti-La/SSb ant
ibodies. Neonatal lupus erythematosus was diagnosed. During pregnancy
the mother had suffered from HELLP syndrome. The reported case points
our the necessity to differentiate HELLP syndrome from first manifesta
tion of lupus erythematosus during pregnancy. A direct causal relation
ship between neonatal lupus erythematosus and HELLP syndrome of the mo
ther seems to be unlikely.
