The present status of the Baikal deep underwater neutrino experiment i
s reviewed. The design and performance of the large deep underwater Ch
erenkov detector for muons and neutrinos, NT-200 (neutrino telescope w
ith 200 phototubes), which is currently under construction in Lake Bai
kal, are described. Some results obtained with the intermediate detect
ors NT-36 (1993-1995), NT-72 (1995 to 1996), and NT-96 (1996 to 1997)
are presented. They include the first clear neutrino candidates select
ed in the 1994 and 1996 data samples.
