Abstract
Reaction of the dianion derived from N-Cbz-glycine ethyl ester with 2- carboxybenzaldehyde gave the 2-(phthalidyl)glycinate derivative 8 as t he major product. Successive treatment of the latter with LiOH and CF3 CO2H/CF3SO3H afforded the title compound in good overall yield.
