Abstract
The past year has seen significant advances in our understanding of th e role played by the primary visual cortex (V1) in stereoscopic vision . Recently, the mechanism by which complex cells in V1 respond to rand om-dot stereograms has been characterized; it appears that their respo nse properties greatly reduce the complexity of one of the critical li nks for stereopsis, the correspondence problem.
