An investigation of the dielectric properties of powdered materials us
ing a parallel plate waveguide is presented. The numerical model is im
plemented using a finite element method with a TE10 mode current sourc
e. Small particles are simulated by applying the dielectric constant t
o a random selection of triangles in the material region. In the two d
imensional case, an adaptive mesh technique is implemented to obtain a
n efficient mesh. A comparison with analytic models and measurements i
s provided.
