A useful method for incorporation of aromatic molecules into hydrophob
ic moiety of natural lipids was devised. A number of fluorescent label
ed phospholipids (anthryl- and pyrenyl-labeled phosphatidylcholines, p
hosphatidylethanolamines, phosphatidylinositols and diphosphatidylglyc
erols) as well as phospholipids immobilized on aryl-containing carrier
s were prepared in one step by interaction of natural unsaturated glyc
erophospholipids with corresponding arenes under the conditions of Fri
edel-Crafts alkylation. Localization of the label in acyl moieties cor
responding to distribution of unsaturated fatty acyl residues in natur
al glycerophospholipid molecules was established by methods of chemica
l and enzymatic degradation. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science Ireland Ltd. Al
