Pulse radiolysis has been used to investigate scavenging of hydrated e
lectrons (e(aq)-) by hydrophobic acceptors in anionic micellar solutio
ns of dodecylsulfates and cationic micellar solutions of alkyltrimethy
lammonium halides. It is found that the rate of e(aq)- decay depends n
ot only on the charge of micelles but also on the kind of scavenger, m
icellar size and the nature of counterions. The results are discussed
in terms of scavenger effectiveness, its distribution between aqueous
and micellar phases and location in the aggregates of different struct
ure.
